Since
Monotype invented the
original hot-metal type composing machines and founded the Monotype corporation
in 1897, Monotype has been committed to supplying typefaces of the highest
quality.
The Monotype Typeface Library
contains a wide range of original typeface designs and historical revivals. Some
of the best known typefaces include Baskerville, Bell, Bembo, Centaur, Garamond,
Gill Sans, Plantin, Rockwell, Walbaum and perhaps the most well known typeface
in the world, Times New Roman. The library currently holds over 2,000 typefaces,
including over 200 Non-Latin scripts.
Monotype's first achievement in
Chinese Language goes back to 1920 when a font was cut to print a New
Testament.
Chinese
fontsMonotype has made available its
Chinese fonts in hinted PostScript Language Composite Type 4 and TrueType
Format. Other formats such as Adobe CID format are available upon
request.
These have been produced to the
highest quality standard with the latest state-of-the-art font production tools
from companies such as Adobe Systems and Projective Solutions. The fonts adopt
hinting technology to ensure the best quality output results from high
resolution imagesetters to 72 dpi screen display. All PostScript fonts are
available on Monotype imagesetters and will work with two byte PostScript RIP from Adobe Systems, their licensees, and any PostScript Compatible
interpreters.
Monotype's Chinese fonts are
produced in the Big 5 and the GB Standard Coding. Monotype can also supply fonts
in Unicode, GBK, IBM5550, CNS character set & encodings. Professional users
will appreciate that Monotype can offer many different typefaces with 13,051
characters. Further traditional Chinese typefaces are currently under
development as part of a continuing program of creating new
typefaces.
A range of important organizations
such as the Hong Kong Government Printing Department, the Next Week Magazine in
Hong Kong, The Central Daily News in Taiwan, and Guang Ming Daily in The
People's Republic of China, are among the many users of Monotype Chinese
typefaces.
The PostScript typefaces were
developed by China Type Design Limited (CTDL) in Hong Kong, a fully-owned
subsidiary
of Monotype
Imaging Inc..
CTDL was founded in 1986 and has a team of experienced experts who have
developed the well known Chinese Typefaces Library for the Montoype Lasercomp
imagesetter.
With effective from 19 Jan 2010 (the "Effective Date"), China Type Design Limited will be renamed as Monotype Imaging Hong Kong Limited.
